Shakeema
Sherry Cochrane
A Journey of Resilience and Creativity
Shakeema
Sherry Cochrane, an Afro-Latina, grew up in a family of seven
with her parents and four siblings. She was born in Manhattan,
NY, and moved to Hunter-Tannersville, NY as a baby. In a town
where few people looked like her and often left soon after moving
in, she struggled with acceptance and staying true to herself.
After a traumatic event, her family left their home of 12 years,
leading to a series of moves: five years in Catskill, two years
in Hudson, six months in Atlanta, Georgia, and finally back to
the Hudson Valley.
Shakeema faced constant upheaval throughout her life, starting
over repeatedly with little stability. Despite these challenges,
she became one of the first in her family to graduate and attend
college at age 20. She worked through her pregnancy, securing
an apartment, car, and job before giving birth. Her healthcare
career began as a Med Tech and PCA at an assisted living facility,
working 40 to 60+ hours a week. Determined to provide more
for herself and her daughter, she became a Home Health Aide (HHA)
and continued her education, earning credentials as a Medical
Assistant, EKG Tech, and Phlebotomist. In 2018, she received her
associate's degree in medical assistance.
In 2019, while expecting another daughter, the Covid pandemic
began. To protect her family, she left clinical healthcare for
a role at a Medical/Dental insurance call center. During
this period, she created a guided journal to help others
manage their emotions. Balancing work and home life, Shakeema
faced significant personal and emotional challenges. However,
she discovered her passion for the creative world through photoshoots,
transitioning from freelance modeling to creative direction.
